Promote Splitit on your website

Installments help you increase average order value and drive more conversion by giving shoppers the flexibility to spread the cost over time.

When paying in full upfront isn’t the only option, they’re more likely to choose the slightly better model, add an accessory, or make a purchase they would have otherwise talked themselves out of.

Mention installments early

Shoppers who see installments early — on the homepage, on the product page — consider products in a higher price bracket and add things to their order they otherwise wouldn’t.

53% of merchants report that showing installments before the cart drives more high-ticket purchases.

High-ticket purchases can cause sticker shock, even when they genuinely want the product. Sticker shock can be enough to make a shopper put it off, downgrade to a cheaper option, or leave it altogether. By showing a monthly cost next to the total cost, the purchase can feel less daunting and more justifiable.

Getting installment messaging in front of shoppers early is what drives the difference in order value and conversion.

How to talk about installments

Shoppers are wary of hidden fees, particularly with pay-later products. Being upfront about the cost of installments and what your terms mean in practice, builds the trust and reassurance shoppers need to complete a purchase.

Splitit doesn’t charge any additional interest or fees on the installment plan itself, but if a shopper doesn’t pay their credit card balance in full each month, their card provider will charge them interest.

Any messaging that uses “interest-free”, “0% APR”, or similar must be accompanied by a disclaimer.

Do say:

  • 0% APR ⓘ
  • Interest-free ⓘ
  • No additional interest or fees ⓘ
  • Monthly payments on your credit card
  • Pay later using the credit you already have
Disclaimer
Wherever you use interest-free messaging, the following must be accessible to the shopper: “0% APR. Your credit card will be charged in equal installments according to your chosen plan. Your standard credit card terms and conditions still apply.”

This can sit directly on the page, or as a link that leads to a “Learn More” overlay or page. Splitit’s built-in “Learn More” modal includes this disclaimer automatically. If you build your own “Learn More” modal, make sure it’s in there.

Where to add installment payment messaging

Product pages

This is where the purchase decision happens and is the most important placement. Place the installment messaging directly beneath or beside the price, so it reads as one.

Include a “Learn More” button to explain how the installment payments work. You can use Splitit’s existing “Learn More” modal, or create your own.

The cart

Cart abandonment at this stage is usually about one thing: the total feels like a lot in one go. Mention installment payments in the order summary, next to the total.

Like on the product pages, include a “Learn More” button to explain how the installment payments work. You can use Splitit’s existing “Learn More” modal, or create your own.

What to say:

  • Or pay in 12 installments, no interest or fees ⓘ
  • Pay monthly on your credit card with 0% APR ⓘ
  • Split into monthly payments using your existing credit card

Product listings

Wherever you list the product price, also include the monthly price. This should be on your home page, your category pages and any other landing pages that display your products.

Website ticker

Use a ticker to display your installment messaging site-wide or on selected pages only. We recommend displaying it site-wide using our on-site messaging elements.

What to say:

  • Pay in interest-free installments, up to [X] months. ⓘ
  • Monthly payments on your credit card. No new loan or application.

Explaining how installment payments work

“Learn more” modal

Splitit’s “Learn more” modal opens up in a lightbox; the customer stays on the page they’re on and gets to learn about how Splitit works without disrupting their journey. This works best as a tooltip next to your installment messaging.

If you offer multiple pay-later options that need further explanation, consider building your own, custom “Learn more” modal. If you need help, please reach out to our team!

Payment options landing page

Some customers may be looking for information about installments before they reach a product page. Consider adding a dedicated page explaining the payment options available and link to it from your ticker, and in your footer.
